Learn. Engage. Change

Climate Change has become THE biggest challenge facing mankind in the 21st century. Depleting natural resources due to unsustainable lifestyles and ever degrading bio diversity pose a serious threat to our existence on planet earth. Rumours from the scientific commmunity in the world suggest that we might have already passed the critical limit and the world will have to face the consequences of climate change. The United Nations on the other hand is trying to get a deal signed amongst nations that will try and prevent an eco-catastrophe from happening. Drastic reduction in emissions coupled with policies of mutual dependence are being deliberated upon by nations at various conferences.

So what does this mean to all of us? What does it mean to people in Hyderabad? Would we be affected by this so called invisible enemy? The questions, the people who ask them and the answers are always aplenty but the need of the hour are people who can act. Hyderabad is slowly turning into a megacity with urban growth touching new scales but all this is being achieved at the expense of environmental degradation. Our water levels are abysmally low, pollution levels are dangerously high, landscapes are worsening and lifetyles are becoming unsustainable. All these problems are being addressed but they need a bigger platform and a louder voice to drive any possibility of change. This simply translates into individual action and the youth of this city can be a great force to reckon with. Our action should be able to drive positive policy outcomes at the local government level thereby bringing a semblance of hope to this great city.

The Hyderabad Youth Summit on Climate Change '09 will bring together 120 young students and professionals from the age group of 16 to 30 to learn and also share their thoughts on Climate Change and its invariable impact on a growing city like Hyderabad. In addition the summit will also produce a Hyderabad youth charter on CC: how can the city adapt or mitigate the impacts of Climate Change. So if you feel young, passionate and energetic and want to do something about it, then this is your chance. Fill up the application and send it to us by June 5th '09 to [email protected]
